Erik ten Hag has spoken plenty about what he needs from his players heading into the new Premier League season. Both existing players and new signing.

United suffered a dismal campaign in the league, finishing eighth with a minus goal difference - their worst top-flight performance in more than 30 years.

The lack of leadership was crystal clear at times. While Bruno Fernandes has led by example at times, his body language has often been criticised, as has that of a number of other Old Trafford stars.

It's an area Ten hag is keen to fix by adding more strong characters to the dressing room and improving the standards. When a player is having a tough time, he wants others to rally around them, improve their standards and the culture.

"We have to get more consistent," he said after the Rangers pre-season game on Saturday. "That has to do with having the right winning culture. When we bring this in the dressing room... but it's not just to do with the dressing room, the standards should be delivered in the whole club."

Speaking at the end of last season, United legend Wayne Rooney was critical of the lack of leadership in the team, saying: "One thing I would say with Manchester United now is, I look at the team and you’re still asking questions about who the leader is.
