Watch: Wayne Rooney admits he’d love to be Man Utd manager

Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has revealed that he would love to manage the Red Devils in the future.

Rooney joined United from Everton in 2004 and enjoyed an illustrious playing career at Old Trafford, winning five Premier League titles, three League Cups, an FA Cup, the Champions League and the Europa League.

The striker also made history by becoming their all-time leading goalscorer, netting 253 goals in 559 appearances in all competitions.

After leaving Old Trafford in 2017, he had spells with Everton, DC United and Derby County before hanging up his boots in January 2021.

The 36-year-old was then appointed manager of the latter and has been earning rave reviews for his work at Pride Park. Despite receiving an 11-point deduction, Derby are currently just five points away from safety with 16 games left in the Championship season.

Rooney was recently offered the opportunity to interview for the Everton job but turned it down as he had no intention of leaving Derby in their current situation.

While his focus is on keeping Derby in the Championship, he admits he would love to take charge of United or Everton in the future.

Ji-Sung Park, who spent seven years alongside Rooney at United, has previously tipped the former England international to one day take the reigns at Old Trafford.

“I believe Wayne can make it,” Park told Goal in 2021. “He had great experiences from his very young age and he also had many difficult moments in his career that he overcame eventually.

“For sure, he has great leadership skills as well. So, I believe he can be United’s manager in the future.”

According to recent reports, United’s current players are keen on Mauricio Pochettino becoming permanent manager in the summer.
