WATCH | 'SA footballers don't know their worth': Mosimane makes strong case for overseas moves

South Africa's leading football coach, Pitso Mosimane, says South African players don't know their worth abroad and that they can become "millionaires" if they broaden their horizons.

This was days after Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos said breakthrough Mamelodi Sundowns starlet Cassius Mailula was not ready to play overseas yet.

But Mosimane maintained that South African players could command huge wages abroad that could be life-changing if they spread their wings.

"When it comes to our football in the country, there’s a lot that needs to change," Mosimane said last week when he was revealed as a Nedbank Cup ambassador.

"Players must also get the education of what's happening outside [versus] what's happening here at home. Some of the things I know and see ... I can't say a lot because it's a bit controversial and I'll be in trouble with the football people.

"They'll say I'm now getting into the players' heads, telling them to leave and not play for us.

"South African players don't know how good they are and they don't know what they're worth. They are worth more.

"They can earn more money and be millionaires, but they are focused here. But I don't blame them because there is no information passed to them. Or sometimes they are told but don't listen."

The Al-Ahli (Saudi Arabia) coach said he learnt his worth when teams outside of SA started fishing for his signature.

Mosimane had a highly-publicised departure from Mamelodi Sundowns in 2020, a team he led to the 2016 CAF Champions League.

At the time, he left Chloorkop, where he spent eight years, for Egypt's Al Ahly, where he won the CAF Champions League two more times.
