A Belgian's head on a block ... again: 'Kill me' if Bafana don't advance at Afcon, Broos reiterates

In May 2021, after the 70-year-old had signed a five-year deal as Bafana coach, the Belgian stated on record that the South African public could kill him if Bafana did not qualify for Afcon.

At the time, the former Cameroon boss had replaced SA head coach Molefi Ntseki, who had failed to guide the national team to the 2021 Afcon edition.

At his unveiling nearly two years ago, in what has become known as his usual bullish manner, Broos said that he should not be judged on World Cup qualification but, instead, on Afcon qualification.

"If Bafana Bafana don't qualify for the 2023 Afcon, you can kill me. I know this country is looking forward to success," Broos said then.

The Belgian mentor has now revised those words after South Africa beat Liberia 2-1 in Monrovia on Tuesday to secure qualification for the tournament in Ivory Coast next year, alongside Morocco from Group K.

"That's what I meant at that moment," he told the SABC during a post-match interview on Tuesday.

"This is a country that normally should be every time on Afcon. And I didn't understand why it didn’t go the last years.

"So, this was very important. We have a new team, we have a young team, and international games are very important to have the international experience. And also going to the biggest tournament of Africa.

"So, we did it now, we can only progress in the next months with opponents that can learn on something and be ready for Afcon.
