Watch Rory McIlroy in epic Scottish Open response as golf hero earns 'wee bit more' than punter who filled pockets

Beaming Rory McIlroy delivered a brilliant comeback to a punter after the pair basked in the glow of his thrilling Scottish Open win.

The four-time major winner held his nerve to see off Scottish hero Bob MacIntyre who produced a scintillating final round before the Northern Irishman birdied the final two holes at the Renaissance Club. McIlroy was filmed soaking up his win when a fan in the Scottish Open crowd below told him his exploits had added a serious loot to his wallet – to the tune of £300.

And the world No.2, quick as a flash, responded by telling him he had just earned "a wee bit more". That was a slight understatement as the golf hero earned a cool £1.35million and a confidence jolt ahead of The Open at Royal Liverpool which tees off on Thursday.

The 34-year-old is among the favourites and he is hell-bent on ending a nine-year wait for his fifth major after multiple near misses in recent years. And McIlroy was jubilant in the wake of his battling win which required a grandstand finish – something which his critics have claimed has been missing in recent times.

He said: “It feels incredible. It’s been a sort of long six months, I feel, since I won in Dubai. I’ve given myself tons of chances and hopefully this win sort of breaks the seal for me, especially going into next week. I don’t feel like it really proves anything. I don’t feel like I need to prove anything in my career but it’s satisfying to know that for me that I can still do it. It’s nice to have the validation. It’s great racking up top fives, top 10s, but it’s much nicer heading away with a trophy on Sunday afternoon. It’s a great shot of confidence.”
