Rory McIlroy silences himself after Open Championship tough day as he snubs media duties
Rory McIlroy has opted NOT to speak to the media after a disappointing day at the Open.
The Northern Irishman broke Scottish hearts last week when he secured a victory in the Scottish Open at the Renaissance Club, as homegrown hero Bob MacIntyre looked set to win the big prize. Now at the Open in Liverpool, the former world number one golfer failed to make birdie at the last and finished on three under after a round of 69. McIlroy has previously used the media to show his disdain for the LIV Golf movement, which bubbled up to the surface at the Scottish Open last week.
But the 34-year-old missed seven birdies putts from inside 17 feet across a tough day at the Open as he aims to end his drought in the majors. McIlroy spoke vocally about wanting to scoop one more of the big four prizes in men's golf and opted out of press duties on TV, radio and print reports Bunkered deputy editor Michael McEwan.
Meanwhile Spanish golfer Jon Rahm charged into contention with eight-under after a round of 63, with American Brian Harmin leading at -12 on day three of the championships at Royal Liverpool. McIlroy ends the day tied in 11th place
