Watch Rickie Fowler branded a 'coward' over Leeds United U-turn as heckler targets golf hero during his round

Golf hero Rickie Fowler was accosted by a heckler who chided him over his decision not to invest in Leeds United.

The American is revered by lovers of the sport and his recent comeback win at the Rocket Mortgage Classic in Detroit was saluted after a nightmare slide down the world rankings. But one detractor made clear he wasn't Team Fowler with a jibe at the 34-year-old after he decided against investing in the 49ers' takeover of the Elland Road side. And Fowler – amid his campaign at The Open at Royal Liverpool – was viewed as a target. The detractor, who was filmed slamming Fowler, said: "What happened to the 49ers investment? Coward."

Fowler addressed his decision to not commit after Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth joined the new era at the Yorkshire giants. He said: "Hopefully it all works out with JT and Jordan being involved. My financial team just didn't necessarily advise for it, so we decided to not go forward with it. Football – (or), as we call it, soccer – obviously it isn't as big in the States, but a lot of us that don't follow it as deeply as everyone over here appreciate sport at the highest level.

"It doesn't change my interest at all. There may be some other opportunities out there. "I don't (have a favourite team), but if there's some sort of financial involvement, I'm sure they'll have plenty of support from me. I can be bought."
