WATCH | Marlow shock Selborne, Grey Bloem crush Welkom Gim as schools rugby swings into gear

Cradock's Hoër Landbouskool Marlow were the biggest winners of the early schoolboy rugby weekends when they beat East London's Selborne College 23-20 at the Hoërskool Grens Festival in East London on Saturday.

Marlow were deserving winners, with the 'Wolramme' taking an 18-3 half-time lead in blustery conditions.

Selborne hit back in the second half to lead 20-18, but Marlow scored a late try to win the game and record a notable success over one of the Border's biggest rugby schools.

Hosts Grens lost 24-12 to Hudson Park while Cambridge were beaten 25-7 by Makhanda's Kingswood College.

Gill College from Somerset East saw off Komani's Hoërskool Hangklip 29-12 in one of the other games at the festival.

Schools rugby was also on the go elsewhere in the country, with Grey College taking teams to Welkom and Kroonstad.

Grey College's 1st team beat Welkom Gimnasium 71-21, but the latter side entertained as their three tries were easily the best of the game despite being manhandled by their accomplished visitors.

Grey College's second team, who are called the 'Cherries', beat Ligbron's first team 45-10 in Kroonstad.

There also was schools rugby action in Johannesburg where Parktown Boys' High beat St Stithian's College 13-3.

Hoërskool Helpmekaar from Parktown travelled to Balgowan where they performed better in a 24-24 draw against Michaelhouse while Menlopark beat Transvalia 22-13.

Down in the Western Cape, Boland Landbou beat Drostdy Technical High School 24-10 at the Boland Landbou rugby day.

The schoolboy rugby weekend shifts will swing into stronger gear this weekend when Selborne College hosts the Border Schools Rugby Day where they'll be playing in the main game against Stirling High School.
