Warning from UK plumber as common bathroom flushing habit could lead to costly repairs

A plumbing professional has cautioned against the disposal of a commonly used bathroom item down the loo, which could lead to repairing bills amounting to thousands of pounds.

Each year in the UK, Southern Water records approximately 10,000 instances of pipe and drain blockages.

Awareness of what can and can't be flushed is crucial to avoid costly problems for homeowners. Plumbing expert David Doran of Blackstone Plumbing and Heating spoke with Yell, listing some seemingly harmless items that should never be discarded via the toilet - including a product many of us use daily when cleaning our teeth.

Dental floss is often disposed of down the toilet, as this can be a quick way to get rid of it, the Express reports. But David has strongly advised against doing this, saying: "Dental floss is non-biodegradable and usually made from Teflon or nylon, meaning it can wrap around other debris, worsening clogs."

The result of this mistake may result in water damage in case your blocked lavatory overflows - and mending water damage can cost about £2,000 on average, which nobody wants to have to pay.

As well as this, thoughtlessly flushing some stray hair down the toilet can also cause significant long-term issues and another potential financial burden.

When hair accumulates in your drains after being flushed, it can create a blockage that hinders water flow. This can result in water backups, overflows, and even flooding.

It can also lead to pipe corrosion and breakage over time, and in severe cases, can cause your pipes to burst.
