Waitrose shoppers divided over 4th of July vegetarian hot dog recipe
Waitrose has shared a vegetarian hot dog recipe for shoppers looking at celebrating the fourth of July - but not everyone is convinced.
The high-end supermarket chain posted on their Facebook page on Saturday morning, July 2, sharing the recipe. The post read: "Fire up the barbecue and cook up a storm with Phylicia Jackson-Jones' vegetarian hot dogs to celebrate the Fourth of July – Independence Day in America".
The recipe, called "Carrot hot dogs", takes the popular BBQ treat and replaces the meat sausage with an entire carrot, marinated in oil and seasoning for at least 30 minutes before being grilled in the oven or on a BBQ. Some shoppers were up for trying the recipe, or had already tried and tested the carrot-based treat.

One said: "Ooh we used to have carrot burgers… my fave", whilst another shopper even offered up her own amendment to the recipe, saying: "My meat eating son loves carrot hot dogs, but getting the smoky flavour into the carrot can be difficult. I find that softening, then marinating the carrot for a few hours is a good way for the carrot to absorb the flavours. Then as I fry the carrot, I add some of the marinade to the pan."
However, a lot of shoppers in the comments were not quite so onboard with the idea as the store was. One commenter said: "Carrot hot dogs - I’ve seen some depressing sights but this is an all time low. BIN".
Another said: "Can you swap the carrots in your carrot cake for hot dog sausages please. Just for balance", as another commented: "Speaking as a vegetarian, this is frankly ludicrous."
