Virgil van Dijk: Jamie Carragher questions Liverpool star after Man Utd loss

Jamie Carragher has publicly criticised Virgil van Dijk’s defending after Liverpool’s disappointing loss away at Old Trafford.

It was a night to forget for the visitors, who remain winless from their opening three Premier League matches.

Jurgen Klopp’s men looked second best from the first minute and struggled to cope with United’s aggression and desire, ultimately falling to a 2-1 defeat.

Key players like Van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah all looked way off the pace.

And all things considered, it really was a torrid evening all round for Liverpool.

One moment that really defined Liverpool’s evening was the sight of Van Dijk and James Milner tearing into each other after Jadon Sancho opened the scoring for the Red Devils.

When the 22-year-old United man received the ball on the penalty spot, he feigned to shoot before chopping back inside, sending an over-committed Milner for a hot dog and slotting home with ease.

It really was a thing of beauty, although certainly didn’t cover the experienced Milner in any glory, who you would expect to know better.

But question marks were raised about Van Dijk’s lack of reaction to the events.

Instead of charging down Sancho and attempting to shut off the space, he remained passive and allowed things to unfold.

And it was that, which angered Milner greatly and sparked the uncharacteristic scenes of Liverpool players arguing amongst each other.

It’s a view that was shared by legendary Liverpool centre-back, Jamie Carragher.

As part of Sky Sports’ post-match analysis, the pundit didn’t hold back when assessing one key criticism he’s held of the Dutchman for a while.
