Jamie Carragher’s Liverpool analysis after 4-1 loss v Napoli is fascinating

Jamie Carragher produced some fascinating analysis around Liverpool’s defending after his former club suffered a 4-1 defeat to Napoli in the Champions League.

Jurgen Klopp’s side, who reached last season’s Champions League final, were dismantled by their Italian opponents at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona in Naples.

Luis Diaz pulled a goal back for Liverpool at 4-0 down in the 49th minute but it was effectively game over at half-time.

Much of Liverpool’s defending in the first half was abysmal and nothing like what we’ve come to expect from Klopp’s previously formidable team.

The suspect body language and lack of effort displayed by Liverpool’s players for Napoli’s second goal, scored by Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa, has seriously concerned supporters and understandably so.

After the match was over, Liverpool legend Carragher got off his seat and over to the big screen in the CBS Sports studio to highlight where the Reds are going wrong from a defensive perspective.

His in-depth analysis makes for fascinating viewing.

“This is a problem for Liverpool: the high line,” the respected pundit began. “They’re not actually getting pressure on the ball. It was interesting Andy Robertson said then: ‘We weren’t compact, we weren’t pressing enough’.

“Right now, Liverpool play a high-risk game but they’re not pressing the ball to stop that high-risk game and it’s causing them the problem.

“It’s not a problem with how high the line is, it’s about being compact, being together. So often we say, it’s too easy to get through Liverpool’s midfield. That didn’t happen before, so you could play that high line and be really compact. But if that’s not happening, you have to adapt.”
