Vincent Kompany leans on Celtic excuse in spiky interview after taking Bayern Munich to historic new low

Bristling Bayern Munich boss Vincent Kompany insists it's good that his side were made to defend against Leverkusen - as he pointed to facing Celtic as a reason for the dismal display

The Bundesliga side maintained their eight-point lead at the summit as they held Xabi Alonso's side to a goalless draw - but the table-toppers were left hanging on as Leverkusen relentlessly piled on the pressure. The showing made unwanted history for the Munich heavyweights with the club going a full half of football without having a single shot on goal for the first time since the stat was recorded in Germany - dating back to 1992.

It took Harry Kane until 73 minutes to test Leverkusen goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky - but Kompany was not willing to listen to negativity around the history books with Bayern now in touching distance of the title. Asked if he was satisfied with a point or disappointed, the boss instantly clapped back on Viaplay: "How can I be disappointed? We have just come back from a fantastic result in Glasgow, and they (Leverkusen) far outpace a lot of the competition in the Bundesliga.

"They earned the right to make us defend in this game. They were good on the ball, but we defended really well - and we are eight points clear.

"Of course we look to learn from this game. But we have been so, so dominant on so many occasions this season it was good to see this side of the team as well."

The German side were pushed all the way by the Scottish Premiership leaders in the first leg on Wednesday. Daizen Maeda's second half strike has given the Hoops a lifeline as they look to cause a major upset and turnaround the 2-1 defeat in Glasgow's east end.
