Villa's Douglas Luiz scores yet another direct corner in Arsenal clash
Douglas Luiz is a god at scoring from corners.
Like, seriously. Just when you thought that scoring a so-called ‘Olympic goal’ was something that only happens once in a blue moon, you stumble across a player who has become an expert at it.
While David Beckham, Roberto Carlos, Thierry Henry and Toni Kroos might all have scored anomalous potshots from the quadrant every now and again, Luiz has turned a scenario almost exclusively reserved for crossing into his own version of penalties.
At least, that seems to be the case in 2022 because the Aston Villa midfielder scored his third direct corner in the space of just a few weeks during the trip to Arsenal on Wednesday.
Having scored an Olympic goal under somewhat fortuitous circumstances at Walsall in pre-season, the Brazilian pulled off the stunt in an official match against Bolton Wanderers in the Carabao Cup.
And the world started waking up to the fact that Luiz was something of an expert at this method of scoring when Villa released footage of him practising and scoring an identical corner the day before in training.
We joked at the time that Premier League goalkeepers should therefore watch out for him doing it yet again, but even we didn’t expect him to add yet another to his tally so soon afterwards.
However, that’s exactly what he inflicted upon Arsenal this week as he defied Aaron Ramsdale to pull Villa back into a game that was slipping away from them due to Gabriel Jesus’ opening goal.
With less than 20 minutes to play, the 24-year-old placed the ball down in front of the travelling Villa fans and prepared to whip yet another vicious right-footed delivery straight towards goal.
