Veteran goalkeeper links up with Manchester United

Goalkeeper Joe Lewis is training with Manchester United's Academy to keep fit amid his search for a new club.

The 36-year-old left Scottish Premiership side Aberdeen in the summer and remains a free agent. As first reported by the Daily Telegraph, the stopper has linked up with United to tick over while his search for a new side continues.

Lewis is local to Manchester and the Manchester Evening News understands he spoke with one of the United coaches in requesting to come in and train. He has been joining in sessions with the Academy at Carrington this week.

The keeper spent seven years at Aberdeen, making more than 250 appearances for the club. But he lost his place last term to Kelle Roos and departed in the summer despite having a year left on his deal.

“I have a year left but spoke to the club because I didn’t want to just drag it out for the sake of having another year. I feel it has come to a natural end, I have so many good memories on and off the field," said Lewis, speaking to the Herald in July, where it was revealed he was considering a future as a football agent should his playing career come to an end.

He began his career at Norwich City and also played for Peterborough United and Cardiff along with loan spells at Stockport County, Morecambe, Blackpool and Fulham. He was capped by England at youth level from Under-15s to Under-21s.

There is no suggestion he will sign for United. The Reds have Andre Onana as first choice with Altay Bayindir and Tom Heaton also part of the first-team group.
