Venus Williams set for last-minute Wimbledon appearance with Jamie Murray in mixed doubles

Venus Williams is set for a last-minute Wimbledon appearance after requesting a wildcard to play alongside Great Britain’s Jamie Murray in the mixed doubles.

Her sister, Serena Williams, begins her quest for a record-equalling 24th Grand Slam title on Tuesday but Venus is absent from the women’s singles draw, last stepping on a court in August 2021.

The 42-year-old, who has won the Wimbledon women’s singles title five times, women’s doubles title six times and was a mixed doubles finalist in 2006, has rarely appeared in recent months due to a leg injury and now finds herself at No. 570 in the world.

However, the former world No. 1 in both women’s singles and doubles could now be set to line-up next to Murray – who won the mixed doubles title at Wimbledon in 2007 and 2017 – as he looks to get his men’s doubles campaign underway tomorrow alongside Brazil’s Bruno Soares.

It would not be the first time one of the Murray brothers will have teamed up with one of the Williams sisters, with Andy and Serena teaming up back in 2019.

Venus previously stated she would not be appearing at Wimbledon this year, posting on social media earlier this month: ‘No I’m not playing but I’ll be watching, I’ll be watching Serena.

‘I hope that Serena playing Wimbledon will help you with your Williams fix.’

Jamie, meanwhile, will be looking for his maiden title in the men’s doubles after reaching the SW19 final back in 2017 as he and Soares face French duo Benjamin Bonzi and Arthur Rinderknech on Wednesday.
