Uyo 2025 Niger Delta Sports Festival: Delta, Abia in good stead as athletics commences

• Oborevwori pledges to transform sports in Delta State
Team Delta yesterday defeated Imo State 2-1 in the men’s football event to set the stage for qualification to the quarterfinals of the event. This came after they defeated Cross River 44-39 in the opening game of the women’s basketball, yesterday.

In men’s basketball also played yesterday, Delta beat Rivers State 55- 51, while Abia State came out tops in their handball clash against Delta State.

Rivers State beat Bayelsa 2-1 in men’s football, but lost 0-3 to Delta in the women’s category, just as Imo beat Cross River 3-0 in men’s football.

Action continues today at the various centres with women’s long jump and hammer finals opening the athletics events.

The day’s events will begin with the para women shot put F40 final, which will be followed by women’s triple jump final and the men’s hammer final.

The para 100m T53/54 women’s and men’s final will also be held today alongside the men’s para shotput F/40 final.

The 400m women’s heat will precede the men’s 400m semi final before the women’s shotput final takes centrestage.

In all, there are 14 gold medals on offer at the various centres today.

Tomorrow’s events will begin with women’s and men’s 110m and 100m hurdles heats as well as the men’s and women’s 200m heats.

Also slated for tomorrow are the men and women’s para javelin finals, 5000 women’s final, men and women’s para shot put final, men’s shot put final, men and women’s T45/46 para 400m finals, as well as, men and women’s 400m finals.

The athletes have 12 gold medals to fight for tomorrow.
