USMNT legend Brad Friedel backs Djordje Petrovic to start for Manchester United amid transfer interest

Former Tottenham Hotspur and Blackburn Rovers goalkeeper Brad Friedel believes New England Revolution's Djordje Petrovic has the ability to start for Manchester United in the Premier League next season.

MEN Sport revealed last week the Serbian was being scouted by Erik ten Hag's side and was seen as a player of interest. However, an offer had not been submitted as of yet and, should he sign, he would be seen as a backup option to provide competition for the club.

According to Friedel, the 23-year-old has what it takes to go straight into United's first team and could be Ten Hag's only feasible option considering the tight budget restraints the Reds are under this summer. He explained to OLBG: "I think Djordje Petrovic should be on the radar of Premier League clubs.

"He could start right now for pretty much any team in Europe, although he has a learning curve of course. From what I have seen of him, there has been no better goalkeeper in MLS for a long time. New England are second in the Eastern Conference, they have Carles Gil and Petrovic. If you take those two out of the team they would struggle winning games, they are that influential.

"I think Petrovic is good enough to start for Man United and Chelsea. People are talking about Man United’s goalkeeper situation a lot, but I’m not sure they have the budget right now for the keepers being mentioned in the papers.

"That’s another reason why [David] Raya has not moved as of yet. When you have a year left on your contract, there are not that many people who can afford that kind of money when you can get them in 12 months time."
