Update on tragic case of axe attack victim Cameron Brooksbank following unexplained death and BBC's The Detectives appearance

A coroner is continuing to investigate the death of a young man who featured in the BBC documentary The Detectives following a brutal axe attack, the Manchester Evening News has learned.

Cameron Brooksbank was 17-years-old when he was attacked in the street in Rochdale in October 2017. His case has been documented on the three-part BBC crime documentary, which followed Greater Manchester Police’s dedicated organised crime unit in the borough.

During the series, DS Martin Soutter attempted to bring down the Adam gang — based on the Newbold Estate in the town. Episode one delved into the horrific axe attack that left Cameron needing five surgeries on his arm and hand.

The episode told how Cameron was working as a tree surgeon when he intervened in a road rage incident, attempting to restore peace. In the horrendous attack he was struck by an axe in the armpit, and then on the wrist as he tried to shield his head from another blow.

His hand was partially reattached, but he then required a further five surgeries in the two years since the attack just to maintain 60 percent use of his arm. Sadly, in Wednesday night's episode, the audience was told that Cameron had tragically passed away earlier this year.

The 24-year-old is believed to have died in 'non-suspicious circumstances', though so far his death remains unexplained. The M.E.N. has now learned that Cameron's death is still being investigated by senior coroner Joanne Kearsley.
