Unlucky strikers of PSL: 10 goals a season not good enough, says Grobler of league's top scorers

SuperSport United striker Bradley Grobler expressed his concern about the lack of goals in the DStv Premiership, saying forwards vying for the Golden Boot with meagre scoring figures was not good enough.

The current leader in the Golden Boot race is Mamelodi Sundowns' Peter Shalulile with 11 goals, closely trailed by Grobler and Monnapule Saleng of Orlando Pirates with 10 goals apiece.

"I have to be honest with you, 15 or 16 (goals) is better, but when you are talking about 10 goals in a season, it's not good enough," Grobler said during SuperSport's media open day on Tuesday.

"But I'm not criticising us as strikers ... it's a hard league to score goals," Grobler, who has played football in other countries, added.

He went on to explain that the DStv Premiership is a very defensive league, making it challenging for strikers to score goals.

In the big leagues of Africa, Al-Ittihad's Mamabulo is top scorer on 13 in Egypt's Premier League, while in Morocco's Batola Pro, Mouhcine Lajour top-scored last season with 19 goals.

For argument's sake, further afield in Europe, Manchester City's Erling Haaland has top-scored with 35 goals, with Tottenham Hotspur's Harry Kane on 26 in the English Premier League.

In Spanish La Liga, Robert Lewandowski's tally for the season is at 19 for Barcelona and Real Madrid's Karim Benzema is on 17 goals.

"There is no one who wants to go into these last two games and doesn't want to win the top goal-scorer. It's what every striker wants every season," Grobler said.

He remains resolute in elevating his personal goal-scoring tally in the upcoming fixtures, commencing with the encounter against Kaizer Chiefs at the Royal Bafokeng Sports Palace on Saturday.
