Under-13 boys’ side representing Canterbury and St Augustine’s District set to face Salford in English Schools’ Football Association under-13 Champions’ Cup Plate at Sixways Stadium, Worcester

An under-13 boys’ side representing Canterbury and St Augustine’s District are hoping to make more history when they compete at a national competition final this Saturday.

Canterbury and St Augustine’s have become the first side from the region to make the final of the English Schools’ Football Association under-13 Champions’ Cup Plate and face Salford at Sixways Stadium, Worcester, in their bid to win it.

They edged their final-four fixture against Southampton 3-2 after extra-time at Simon Langton Grammar School for Boys.

Blake Zacharia put Canterbury and St Augustine’s ahead after a good run by Sammy-Lee Chibnall, before an own goal made it 2-0 as an away defender inadvertently flicked a cross by left winger Cody Beale into his own net.

Southampton then hit back with efforts either side of half-time to ensure it finished 2-2 in normal time, only for Canterbury and St Augustine’s to get the all-important fifth goal.

After putting a lot of pressure on the visitors, the ball dropped to Chibnall just outside the penalty box and he lobbed the keeper.

Their quarter-final had seen Canterbury and St Augustine’s roar back from behind to see off south London.

Trailing 2-0 at half-time, Zacharia bagged a brace and then won a penalty for Chibnall to convert.

Oscar Lazare then rounded it off for Canterbury and St Augustine’s.
