'Unbelievable' - Journalist excited over Aston Villa-linked 'Mings upgrade'

The 30-year-old’s contract is up next summer and despite helping the club to a Serie A title last season, with the hope of another heading into the final weekend, he could be let go.

It is thought that the Dutchman’s £116k-per-week contract would help ease Inter’s financial struggles, and according to Football Insider, Villa are thought to be keeping an eye on the situation.

They reported that the Italian club valued their player at £40m in the January transfer window but that figure should be lower come the summer, and Jones believes a switch to the West Midlands would be quite a story for Steven Gerrard’s side.

He told GIVEMESPORT: “Stefan de Vrij would be an unbelievable addition, bringing in some much-needed experience to that backline and a winning mentality.

“I think that will really appeal to Steven Gerrard at a time when he’s looking for a Tyrone Mings upgrade that is affordable.”

The 29-year-old has started in all but one of the West Midlands giants’ last 26 games and his presence is vital given how the club have only won once in the nine matches he has missed since the start of the 2019/20 season.

Therefore, it would perhaps be more reasonable to suggest that De Vrij, who is right-footed, could be brought in to better others, which ex-Leeds striker Noel Whelan had previously suggested was needed at Bodymoor Heath, as opposed to being a direct replacement
