"Unbelievable addition" - Transfer insider drops exciting Aston Villa verdict on £40m target
Aston Villa target Stefan de Vrij would be ‘an unbelievable addition’ if he arrives from Inter this summer, according to journalist Dean Jones.
The 30-year-old is widely expected to depart San Siro over the coming months and could be a shock addition to the Midlands outfit as Steven Gerrard looks to embark on an ambitious transfer policy.
Last season, De Vrij formed a formidable partnership alongside Alessandro Bastoni and Milan Skriniar as Inter claimed their first Serie A title in 11 years.
No side in the Italian top-flight conceded fewer goals than the 35 they leaked on their way to silverware, and the Netherlands international has continued to be a mainstay in the starting XI under new boss Simone Inzaghi, featuring from the off in 26 league games.
However, De Vrij’s current contract is set to expire in just over a years’ time, and with no deal appearing on the horizon, he could be sold to help ease Inter’s extensive financial woes.
And according to Football Insider, Villa are keeping close tabs on the 6 foot 2 ace’s situation as Gerrard wants to bring ‘an A-list centre-back’ to Villa Park ahead of next season.
The report claims that De Vrij was valued around the £40 million mark by the Inter hierarchy in January, although due to his contract situation, that figure is likely to drop when the market reopens for business.
Jones believes that the title-winner would be a significant coup for Villa, especially as Gerrard is believed to be on the lookout for a ‘Tyrone Mings upgrade that is affordable’.
