Ulster confirm Steven Kitshoff's early departure

Ulster have confirmed that World Cup-winning prop Steven Kitshoff is to be granted early release from his contract at the end of the season.

The South African, who only joined the province in November after winning his second World Cup with the Springboks, will rejoin his former side the Stormers this summer.

Kitshoff was Ulster's marquee signing in 2023, agreeing a three-year deal to work under then-head coach Dan McFarland.

However, a recent takeover of the Stormers by a part-owned Irish consortium has seen the Cape Town side receive a cash injection, which will allow them bring their former captain back to Western Province.

Kitshoff has been ever-present in Ulster's squad since making his debut against the Glasgow Warriors in November, and is named in their starting team for Sunday's Challenge Cup Round of 16 meeting with Montpellier.

However, the loosehead has reportedly struggled to settle in Belfast, while the province's difficulties both on and off the pitch have no doubt played a part in that, with head coach McFarland and CEO Jonny Petrie both resigning in recent weeks.

"Since arriving in Belfast, I have really enjoyed my time in the Ulster jersey, and it's been a privilege to be a part of such a great group of players and support staff," Kitshoff said in a statement issued by Ulster Rugby.

"Ulster will always have a place in my heart, and I’m grateful to the supporters that welcomed me to a club and province that is undoubtedly a very special place."
