UK weather forecast as MORE snow and ice expected this week amid freezing snap

More snow is forecast in parts of the UK this week as a freezing snap continues.

Forecasters have warned of sub-zero temperatures before the weekend, with more wintry showers set to fall following snowy days in parts of the UK on Monday and Tuesday. The forecaster issued a yellow warning for ice for much of southern England, the Midlands and eastern Wales from 5pm on Tuesday to 10am on Wednesday.

Several other warnings for snow and ice have been in force, with the Met Office advising vehicles could be stranded, power cuts may occur and rural areas could be cut off. Some lying snow is expected to reach up to 10cm or more over higher ground and ice is expected to form on untreated surfaces.

A UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) amber cold weather health alert, warning of conditions that could be dangerous for vulnerable people, including the elderly, is in place until 6pm on Saturday for some areas. The cold temperatures are expected to last until at least Friday, before milder conditions set in over the weekend.

In Greater Manchester, the mercury is set to plummet to 0C through the nights and early hours over the coming days. On Saturday, heavy rain is forecast as conditions turn much milder.

The mercury will rise to up to 10C in our region on Saturday and up to 13C on Sunday bringing an end to the freezing cold snap. On the forecast for the coming days for the UK, the Met Office said: "Rain, snow and ice are potential hazards through this week, with weather warnings issued and potential ongoing disruption for some."
