UK holidaymakers warned as Spain issues red alert

Brits holidaying in Spain this weekend have been warned of ‘extreme temperatures’ as the country’s weather agency Aemet issues alerts for vast areas of Spain - including a red alert for Valencia. Forecasters predict highs of up to 44C in the interior of the region, while on the coast of Valencia it’s set to reach 42C.

The ‘red’ weather warning indicates an ‘extreme risk’ and is in place from 1pm on Saturday July 20 until 9pm this evening. Elsewhere, amber warnings have been issued across the country, with the likes of Alicante, Seville and Murcia experiencing highs of 42C.

Yellow warnings have been issued for Malaga and Barcelona, where the mercury could reach 38C. Meanwhile the Balearic Islands could see figures in the late 30s. Forecasting for Saturday, Aemet said: “Significantly high temperatures in most of the southern and northeastern half of the peninsula, as well as in both archipelagos.”

It added: “Temperatures will exceed 35 degrees in a large part of the interior of the southern half and the north-east of the peninsula, as well as in parts of the Balearic Islands and in the south of the Canary Islands, and temperatures will probably even exceed 40 degrees in the valleys of Andalusia and in parts of Murcia and the south of the Valencian Community.”

However, the hot conditions are set to cool off on Sunday, giving way to rain and storms in some areas. But it will stay warm in the north and in the centre of the country.
