Met Office warns 'tropical storm' will bring temperatures of 30C to UK next week

The Met Office says a tropical storm currently battering north America will bring hot temperatures in the low 30s to the UK next week.

The weather agency has warned that another hot spell is just around the corner, with areas in the south and east set to see the highest temperatures.

Ahead of that, there will be some changeable conditions for much of the country, with some rain coming in from the west on Thursday, but fine weather for many on Friday. On Saturday, conditions are likely to feel more humid with temperatures rising for much of the UK on Sunday.

The hot and humid air mass will push across the southern half of the UK over the weekend, bringing the potential for heavy rain in the east on Monday.

Met Office chief meteorologist Dan Suri said Tropical Storm Debby, which made landfall in northern Florida on Monday as a hurricane, is to blame for the change in weather.

He explained: “Tropical Storm Debby in North America is helping to strengthen the jet stream, and is causing it to meander over the Atlantic. This will allow hot air to move into the UK later this weekend, and early next week." He said temperatures could reach the low 30s in places such as the south and southeast, but warned that some place could see thunderstorms as the temperatures rise.

"Further north and west within this warm air, outbreaks of heavy showers or thunderstorms are possible," he said. "As well as the hot daytime temperatures, a very warm night is also expected on Sunday night into Monday”.
