Ugbomro Secondary School wins Zenith Bank/Delta Principals’ Cup
Ugbomro Secondary School, Ugbomro, on Thursday, emerged winner of this year’s Zenith Bank/Delta Principals’ Cup after beating Umutu Mixed School, Umutu, 2-0.
Utagba-Ogbe Grammar School, Kwale, clinched the second position with a 3-0 victory against Ogbene Secondary School, Okuokoko.
The two matches were played at Steve Keshi Stadium, Asaba, the state capital, where the winner walked away with an 18-seater Hiace bus and two million naira. Other teams were rewarded with cash donations.
Speaking shortly after the final match, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, who applauded the teams for participating in the football tournament, called on well-meaning Nigerians and corporate organizations doing business in the state to engage in public-private partnerships to explore and develop other areas of grassroots sports that will help unlock the talents of children.
The governor, who spoke through the Speaker of Delta State Assembly, Rt. Hon. Dennis Emomotimi Guwor, said the development of grassroots sports is a priority of the government, stressing, “We are committed to investing in sports, as evidenced in the 2024 National Youth Games.
“We will continue to support grassroots sports games as a means of engaging the teeming youth population, especially those who desire to take up sports as a career.”
“The state has committed huge resources to sports development by ensuring that adequate facilities are put in place for athletes and other sportsmen,” Oborevwori declared.
The state Commissioner for Secondary Education, Rose Ezewu, who commended Zenith Bank for supporting the game, said the government, through the tournament, is promoting sports activities to scout for grassroots talents.
