UFC star Paul Craig targets the top in tough light-heavyweight division

Airdrie UFC star Paul Craig says he's looking to hit the top two spots in his division before the end of this year.

Craig has already said he aims to be crowned light-heavyweight champion before retiring at the age of 35, which he turns in November.

But with a fight against Ukrainian Nikita Krylov lined up in London on March 19, 'Bearjew' could be moving closer to his target.

Should Craig win that bout, it could set up a showdown against Anthony Smith, who is one of the biggest names in the division.

Craig, who is unbeaten in his last five fights, told BBC Sport Scotland : "I got a lot of love for the UK and this card is stacked with UK talent.

"Previously, we've had the UFC in London and they've had to bring people over to be headliners.

"I remember when they brought Fabricio Werdum over to headline four years ago - we didn't have a UK main event.

"This year, we have a whole list and from top to bottom it's all UK fighters - it's amazing."

Should Craig defeat 29-year-old Krylov, it could open doors for him, with Smith up after him.

Craig, who is ranked 11th in his division, said of a potential match-up with Smith: "I think it could be a fun one for the fans. Let's be honest, we are in this sport for entertainment.

"I believe it's a winnable fight for me.

"He's a middleweight who is in light-heavyweight, I believe.

"I'll get a win over him, then I'm in the title contention for that one and two spot.

"That's not arrogant of me - I think you need clear and decisive goals."
