Tyrell Malacia marks a change in Manchester United's squad strategy

Tyrell Malacia and Jose Mourinho were captured together after the Europa Conference League final and should Malacia relegate Luke Shaw back to the Manchester United bench the image is likely to go viral.

Plenty of United fans who lapped up Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's gleeful celebration with Shaw under Mourinho's nose at Tottenham last year then jumped aboard the "Ole out" bandwagon. They are now gunning for Shaw after a dismal season.

Matchgoers chanted "Jose's right, the board is s---e" as the net closed in on Mourinho and he has been right about most things at United. Most thought Mourinho was a prophet of doom and few acknowledged his prescience.

Mourinho had history with Shaw from their disastrous meeting about a prospective transfer from Southampton to Chelsea in 2014. To outsiders, Mourinho's treatment of Shaw at United appeared unfair and unhelpful.

What most did not know was one morning Shaw reported late for training and, when pressed for an explanation, confided his mother had overslept and forgotten to wake him. Many months after Mourinho had left United, a player recorded Shaw being outsprinted by a fitness coach on their smartphone during pre-season in Perth.

Shaw has had one standout season for United when he was as worthy of the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award as its recipient, Bruno Fernandes. Shaw was the more consistent performer and carried that momentum into the European Championship, becoming the third England international to score in a major international final.
