Two ways Celtic or Rangers can win the Premiership title on derby day

It's the scenario the SPFL have seemingly tried to avoid in the past and in recent years, it's never really been on the cards.

But the current Premiership title race will hinge on the last five games (six in Rangers' case) and the final Old Firm clash has been set for May 11 - the third post-split round of fixtures. It was never going to be the final game, although that would certainly make for a hell of a spectacle. But bad memories fade slowly and images of the 1999 Parkhead so-called shame game are still burned into the psyche.

Dick Advocaat's Gers went to Celtic Park knowing a win would seal the league title. Neil McCann did the damage with a double either side of a Jorg Albertz spot kick. But that didn't tell the whole story as Celtic lost their heads on and off the park. A raging Stephane Mahe saw red before the break, then the shocking images that became synonymous with the game, which showed referee Hugh Dallas on the deck with blood pouring from his head after bing hit by a coin.

Rod Wallace joined Mahe up the tunnel late on, and the Rangers celebratory huddle after full-time did little to calm things down. The lack of away fans would take some of the heat out of the occasion, but it's not a risk officials are willing to take these days.

It's been a possibility since despite the scheduling. Rangers thwarted Celtic's bid to win the league at Ibrox in March 2012 with a 3-2 victory and the Hoops sealed seven in a row with a 5-0 rout of the Light Blues in 2018.
