Two people rescued from burning building in shadow of United's Old Trafford stadium

An investigation is underway after two people were rescued from a derelict office block in Old Trafford. Fire began to rip through Charlton House, on Warwick Road, at around 11.20pm last night.

Huge flames were seen soaring from the vacant building, which is close to Chester Road and Manchester United's Old Trafford stadium. Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) says two people were rescued from the scene by firefighters.

They were checked over by paramedics as a precaution. Video footage from the scene, posted on social media, showed flames erupting from the burning building.

Large plumes of smoke were also seen as firefighters battled to get the blaze under control. Crews were at the scene for more than three hours.

A GMFRS spokesperson said: “At around 11.20pm on Thursday, September 7, fire crews were called to reports of a fire at a commercial building on Warwick Road, Old Trafford. Eight fire engines from stations in Trafford, Salford and Manchester were quickly mobilised to the incident.

"They were joined by the technical response unit from Ashton, the command unit from Hyde and the aerial ladder platform from Whitehill. The fire involved a quantity of waste on the second floor of the derelict building.

"Firefighters rescued two people from the building - there were no injuries reported, but both people were checked at the scene by colleagues from North West Ambulance Service as a precaution. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used hose reels to extinguish the fire.

"An investigation into the cause of the fire is now underway. GMFRS crews were in attendance for about three and a half hours.”
