Two footballers in Brazil sacked for alleged match fixing after 'ugly' own goal

Two footballers have been sacked by a Brazilian football club following a truly unbelievable own goal just one minute from full-time.

Footage has emerged which appears to show Atletico Amazonense midfielder, Julian Campos, deliberately firing the ball into his own net before the final whistle.

The incident came when Campos received a pass back from his teammate, turned, and casually lofted the ball straight past his goalkeeper, who made no attempt to stop the strike passing him by.

The goal didn’t directly impact the outcome of the game, with Amazonense instead losing 4-1 to rivals Sul America rather than just 3-1.

However, Sunday’s defeat did put Amazonense out of the race for promotion to the state’s top-tier.

And with incidents happening such as this one, you have to ask yourself the question as to whether the game was being sabotaged all along.

That’s what the club feel, anyway, who said about the midfielder in question, per The Sun: “His unethical attitude ruined any hopes of promotion our team had and made it clear that from the beginning of the game the athlete was determined to sabotage his own side.”

The same article also claimed that a fan standing close to the club president, Henrique Barbosa, could be heard saying: “What was that Henrique? How ugly!”

How very ugly indeed.
