Two badminton players invited to national team, two sisters grab gold, silver in squash

Special recognition came the way of some athletes participating in the 7th National Youth Games yesterday. This followed the invitation of two Katsina badminton athletes to the National camp by the Nigeria Badminton Federation to participate in the forthcoming West Africa Badminton competition U15 championships.

The two athletes, Muhammad Aliyu and Abubakar Abdullahi gave a good account of themselves at the NYG in Asaba, and have been penciled down to participate in the next year’s West Africa Badminton competition in Senegal.

Katsina State so far has had three athletes invited to the national championships.

In a similar development, the performance of 5-year-old Naomi Ehi Onoja in Asaba 2023 National Youth Games has caught the attention of Nigeria Chess Federation.

The 5-year-old Onoja has been penciled down by officials of the Chess Federation as one of the athletes discovered from the Youth Games to be groomed as national athlete for future competitions.

Meanwhile, two members of the same family from Kwara State competed in the final of Squash single event on Wednesday night, grabbing the gold and silver medal in the process.

AbdulRaheem Khadijat competed against her sister, AbdulRahim Aishat, in the final. While Khadijat, an SS3 student of Baptist Government Day Secondary School Ilorin, won the gold medal, Aishat settled for the Silver medal.

The 13-year-old Aishat, who is also a student of Baptist Government Day Secondary School, Ilorin, told journalists that even though she had the intention of beating her sister, she is glad the gold and silver medals went to their family.
