Trusted insider says NUFC target with "outstanding speed" a "more sensible" signing than Pogba

Newcastle United are ‘much more likely’ to sign someone like Joe Gomez than Paul Pogba when the transfer market reopens, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The Magpies became one of the richest football clubs in the world following their Saudi-backed takeover last year and have been linked with several high-profile stars in recent months as a result.

Gomez made his first Premier League start in 486 days in Liverpool’s recent victory over Norwich City at the weekend, with the 24-year-old currently finding himself way down Jurgen Klopp’s pecking order.

The centre-back – who is valued at £22.5m by Transfermarkt – has been unable to displace any of Ibrahima Konate, Joel Matip and Virgil Van Dijk in his bid to become on of the Reds’ first-choice centre-backs.

His lack of regular game time has seen Gomez linked with a move away from Anfield in recent weeks, and the 11-cap England international is unlikely to be short of potential suitors.

According to The Athletic, both Aston Villa and Newcastle are ‘likely to be near the front of the queue’ for his signature in the summer, although other top-flight sides are expected to register an interest.

The 6 foot 2 ace still has two-and-a-half years remaining on his current contract with Liverpool, so Klopp’s charges will not be forced into a sale, but the player may want consistent minutes next term with the World Cup fast approaching.

Newcastle splashed over £90m on five acquisitions in January in what was their first transfer window under their new ownership.

And since then, superstars such as Paul Pogba, Harry Kane and Thomas Muller have been outlined as possible targets for the St. James’ Park outfit when the market reopens.
