‘Traumatised’ - Nottingham Forest presenter gutted after development pre-play-offs

Forest looked set for third, having taken a late 1-0 lead over Hull City in injury time on the final day, but Keane Lewis-Potter’s late equaliser reduced Steve Cooper’s side to fourth after Huddersfield’s 2-0 win over Bristol City.

Forest are the favourites for promotion after a tremendous turnaround under Cooper. When he arrived in September they were rooted to the foot of the table but he has galvanised the squad who are on the verge of making it back to the Premier League for the first time since 1999.

However, Davies has been left to doubt himself after the concession of an injury-time equaliser on Saturday with scars of a past meeting with the Blades still sharp.

Speaking on the Garibaldi Red podcast he said:

(0:14) “So I must admit my heart sank when it wasn’t Luton and it was gonna be Sheffield United. Absolutely traumatised by 2003. Even now.”

The journalist is of course referring to the gut-wrenching 5-4 aggregate defeat to the Yorkshire club in the 2002/03 play-off semi-finals.

After a 1-1 draw at the City Ground in the first leg Forest headed to Sheffield and led 2-0 before relinquishing their lead in the last half hour and ultimately losing  4-3 in extra-time.

However, this time around crucially, Forest will be at home in the second leg and will travel to Bramall Lane knowing that all the impetus is on the Blades to take a hold of the tie.

As fate would have it with the final kick of the season these two clubs collide almost 20 years on from that notorious night for Forest but they will have a chance to put things right and surely those wounds will only inspire them.
