Transformation of huge distribution site reaches next stage - but locals claim work has affected their health
More than 100 homes have been given the green light to be built on the site of the former Shaw Distribution Centre.
Outline planning permission was granted by councillors in Oldham in 2021 for up to 400 new homes on the entire industrial site at Linney Lane, with a number of revisions to the original plans then approved last year. That application also included the demolition of three 100-year-old mills, Elm Mill, Lily No 1 Mill and Lily No 2 Mill.
A reserved matters application for development on ‘phase one’ of the site, which covers more than five hectares, was subsequently submitted by Bellway Homes Limited. The application, which was approved by the planning committee on October 18, will see 130 homes built, of which 26 would be classed as ‘affordable’. These would be sold at 80pc of market value, the meeting was told.

The plans had been reduced by ten properties, and a proposal to include 12 two-bedroom apartments had also been dropped. The development will now be split across three and four-bedroom properties, with a mix of detached, semi-detached and mews style properties. All of the dwellings would be two-storeys high.
Committee member Councillor Marc Hince said: “As a resident of Shaw myself I welcome this development, I think it’s a great use of a brownfield site and it’s important that we categorise them first and protect other areas within our community.”
Each house would have space for two cars, with one car parking space allocated for the apartments,
