Transfer state of play on Tierney, Tillman, Frimpong and more as Calvin Bassey sees £20m bid 'rejected' by Ajax

The grass isn't always greener on the other side as the mixed fortunes of some former Rangers and Celtic stars will attest.

The Glasgow giants have both cashed in for some mega fees as the financial value of starring in the SPFL continues to skyrocket. Jota is the latest to leave for big money and his £25m switch to Saudi Arabia rivals the fee Celtic banked for Kieran Tierney - who could be on the move again after losing his spot to Oleksandr Zinchenko. He and Jeremie Frimpong could both see more cash come back to Parkhead due to healthy sell-on clauses negotiated by the Hoops.

Rangers have a similar vested interest in Calvin Bassey as after an indifferent first year at Ajax, he's in the frame for a second big-money move in as many years. There's also the potential for a windfall off the back of Malik Tillman with Bayern offering up a percentage of his next sale to buy out a purchase option in his Ibrox loan agreement.

Often in the firing line during a patchy first season in Amsterdam, Bassey hasn't been a great fit for Ajax but it seems they are a long way from giving up on the Nigeria star. The Eredivisie side came calling with a bid worth around £23m after his starring role in Rangers' Europa League final run and they appear determined to make a success of it yet.

According to reports in the Netherlands, Brighton came in with a bid of €23m (£19.6m), but after that was rejected, they turned their attentions to Fiorentina's Igor. Rangers are set to take home 10 per cent of the next sale so won't mind Ajax holding out for more cash with Bassey only 23 and under contract for another four years.
