Transfer plan to snatch Man Utd star emerges with new manager facing immediate big call

The next Man Utd manager could be greeted with a big call to make at right-back after Fiorentina’s plan to sign Diogo Dalot surfaced.

The Portuguese right-back, 23, is once again facing uncertain times in his Old Trafford career. Dalot was retained past the summer after the club’s reported pursuit of Kieran Trippier fell short. Aaron Wan-Bissaka began the season as first-choice at right-back, but poor form saw Dalot given a chance to shine.

Indeed, the Portugal international has been Ralf Rangnick’s preferred pick on the right side of his defence.

He compiled a run of 10 starts in 12 league matches between December and mid-February. However, he was then benched for three of the last four.

Dalot’s current contract with Manchester United is due to expire in the summer of 2023. There are reportedly plans afoot to table an extension, though whether it’ll be signed could depend on guarantees about his playing time.

That is a decision that likely won’t be made until United have a new permanent manager installed.

Erik Ten Hag and Mauricio Pochettino are generating the strongest links. Ten Hag was interviewed by the Red Devils last Monday, while Pochettino has been in contact with club chief Richard Arnold.

Regardless of who gets the nod, a report from the Italian press has now claimed the new boss will be faced with a Diogo Dalot dilemma.

Dalot is attracting interest from Serie A side Fiorentina. La Viola currently have Real Madrid loanee Alvaro Odrioziola occupying their right-back berth. However, FirenzeViola.it claim it’s unlikely the Spaniard will join on a permanent deal.
