Tragedy on River Irwell as man's body found with police cordon in place

A street was sealed off today after a man's body was tragically found in the water.

Police were called to Fairbrother Street, in Salford, on Sunday afternoon after reports of a body in the water in the River Irwell. Tragically, a man's body was found.

A cordon has been in place on the scene since, with the pathway between Worrall Street and Bridgewater Wharf also shut off. Plain-clothed detectives could be seen at the scene with officers stood guarding off the cordon.

Residents said they could hear emergency services arriving at the scene at around 1.30pm.

One resident who lives across the water said he saw emergency services had cordoned off the area at around 2pm today. “There is always stuff going on around here, the river is very dangerous," he said. "People are always being found or falling in.”

In a statement, Greater Manchester Police posted: "Emergency services are currently responding to reports of a body in water in the canal near Fairbrother Street in Salford.

"Sadly, the body of a man has been discovered. A scene remains in place and detectives are investigating the full circumstances surrounding this incident."
