Tragedy of dad-of-two, 58, found dead inside his car in moorland village

A tragic dad-of-two was found dead inside his car after poisoning himself with carbon monoxide, an inquest has heard.

Terence Irving, 58, was discovered in the moorland village of Lydgate in Saddleworth, Oldham, on March 17. An inquest at Rochdale Coroner’s Court heard that Mr Irving had been sleeping in the Renault vehicle for about two years when he was found.

The hearing was told that Mr Irving, a former machine operator, struggled with alcohol dependency and had been estranged from family members for several years.

Joanne Foy, Mr Irving’s ex-partner, described him as a 'quiet man' who would 'do anything for friends'. The inquest heard that he had been born in Dumfries, Scotland, but moved to the Chadderton area in 1994.

The inquest heard that Mr Irving began living in the attic of a derelict house off Quick Road, Lydgate, in late 2020. After being told he could no longer stay there, Mr Irving began sleeping in his car on the grounds of the property.

On March 17 of last year, a man who lived at the property called police after discovering Mr Irving's body inside the vehicle. Detective Inspector Andrew Fink, from Greater Manchester Police, said an investigation had found there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding Mr Irving's death.

When he attended the scene the following day, DI Dink said he found the vehicle was locked from the inside. "It looked like it had been there for quite some time," he added.

Mr Irving was 'slumped' in the front passenger seat while the key was in the ignition, said DI Fink.
