Tragedy of boy, 2, who died in 'horrific accident' in his living room as he danced to Cocomelon

A two year-old boy died tragically after he was hit by a falling marble fireplace and television as he danced to the animated children's YouTube programme Cocomelon in the living room of his home.

An inquest heard the heavy fireplace wasn't attached to the wall and the flat screen TV, said to have weighed up to 30 kilos, was resting on top of it, also unsecured.

A coroner has recorded a conclusion of 'accident' after an inquest into the death of Carter Walsh held on Friday at Bolton Coroner's Court. The toddler was at home in Fisher Close in Worsley Mesnes, Wigan, when the horrific accident happened.

His mother was at work at the time and Carter was being looked after by an appropriate family member, the inquest heard.

Police, giving evidence, said an investigation failed to establish what had actually happened. But Detective Inspector Stuart Woodhead, from Greater Manchester Police, said Carter, who was described as a happy, healthy and inquisitive toddler, may have gone towards the fireplace and 'potentially' grabbed it. He said the fireplace was 'vulnerable to topple forward'.

Carter was also said to have 'shown some interest' in the fireplace and had previously been told to come away from it.

His grandmother, Helen Mayhew, told the inquest that tragically, she and her husband, Carter's grandfather, went to the house the day before the tragedy to assess what tools and equipment they would need to securely attach the fireplace and the television to the wall.

She said the property, where Carter lived with his mother and siblings, had recently been decorated and fitted with new carpets.
