Trafford council planning 'temporary stopping facility' for Travellers

Residents across Trafford are being asked for their views on plans for a ‘temporary stopping facility’ for the Traveller community in the borough. The council is looking into the idea of opening the facility on an under-used road near Boyer Street in Old Trafford.

Now, town hall bosses want to know what people think of the proposal. If approved, the temporary site would give Gypsy, Traveller and Roma groups a safe place to stay with toilet and refuse facilities when they are passing through the borough.

The facilities are used in other areas to provide an alternative to temporary stays in neighbourhood locations where conflict with other activities is more likely. Council chiefs say the use of temporary stopping facilities has been employed successfully elsewhere and the Council wants to trial its use in Trafford.

The authority is consulting the issue during the forthcoming summer. If the plan goes ahead, the council will review it after the first season.

A spokesperson for Trafford Council said: “We want to work for the benefit of everyone in our community.

“Providing better facilities for those passing through Trafford could avoid possible interruption to the use of facilities like parks and playing fields. We would like as many residents as possible to give their views on this consultation.”
