Tottenham readying transfer offer for emerging Championship star

Tottenham are stepping up their interest in Peterborough United defender Ronnie Edwards, according to Football Insider.

A host of Premier League clubs are keeping tabs on the young defender, as per the report, and a recruitment source has told Football Insider that it is Tottenham Hotspur that have been making regular checks on the 19-year-old.

Edwards signed for Peterborough United back in 2020 after a successful trial with the club, and went on to have a breakthrough campaign in his first season with Posh.

This season, the 19-year-old centre-back has made 28 appearances in the Sky Bet Championship, and has also featured a further four times in the FA Cup and Carabao Cup.

Spurs look set to face a tough negotiation if they are to sign the young centre-back though, with Posh director of football Barry Fry issuing a hands-off warning to clubs last September.

However, Fry did suggest there would come a time where they would be willing to let Edwards leave – for the right price.

“It’s no secret how highly Ronnie is rated by other clubs and by the England set up. We had 18 Premier League scouts watching him play for the under 23s at our stadium.” Fry told the Peterborough Telegraph in 2021.

“A couple of good seasons in the Championship would make him worth £10million to £20million. There will become a time when we can’t stand in his way as he’d make life-changing money like Ivan Toney as a Premier League player.”

Edwards, who is also an England under-19 international, is contracted to Peterborough United until 2025.

There’s no doubting that Ronnie Edwards has a big future in the game, and with Peterborough looking like they may suffer relegation, this summer could be the right time for both the club and player to depart.
