Tottenham move for £67.3m star can 'definitely happen' with club in big debt - journalist

Journalist Jacque Talbot has claimed that Lautaro Martinez signing for Tottenham Hotspur is definitely something that could happen in the summer.

There have been recent reports that manager Antonio Conte is keen to bring another striker to Tottenham and that Martinez is on the club’s shortlist, but it may be difficult to get a deal over the line due to him signing a contract with Inter just eight months ago.

Martinez was in impressive form for Inter this season, netting 21 times in 35 Serie A appearances, whilst also chipping in with three assists, making him the league’s second-highest goalscorer.

The Argentinian has claimed he wants to stay at Inter, but his future could yet be taken out of his hands if the club are desperate to make up their debt.

With the reports that Conte is keen to bring a new forward to Spurs in the summer, Talbot claimed to GiveMeSport that Martinez is ‘definitely’ someone who could sign for the club.

He said: “Inter Milan need to make money, they need to sell players to make money. They’re in debt, they need to make about €50m. Getting someone like Martinez is on Spurs’ list and could definitely happen.”

Martinez, who has a price tag of €80m (£67.3m), has been a standout performer in Serie A this season. He had the second-best goals-per-minute ratio in the Italian top flight (every 110 minutes), the fifth-highest average player rating at Inter (7.12) and averaged the most shots on target per game for the Nerazzurri (1.5), as per SofaScore.

Spurs qualified for the Champions League ahead of next season, so Conte will be looking to add players to his squad with experience in the competition. He has already signed Ivan Perisic and Martinez could be a good option
