Tottenham "high up" in race for 6 ft 4 ace who's told friends he wants Spurs move - journalist
Tottenham are “pretty high up” on the list to sign West Brom goalkeeper Sam Johnstone this summer, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.
Antonio Conte is hoping to add a backup keeper to his squad in the upcoming window and he is interested in signing the 6 ft 4 England international.
According to the Telegraph, an understudy for Hugo Lloris is one of six positions that Conte wants to strengthen this summer, the others being centre-back, right wing-back, central midfield and up front.
Therefore, Sky Sports believe that Tottenham want to sign Johnstone from West Brom, who’ll be available for nothing once his Baggies contract runs out at the end of the season.
But the 29-year-old’s West Brom career is all-but over already after Steve Bruce dropped him from the squad earlier this month following constant uncertainty over his future.
When asked about his future, Bruce said: “With five games left, it’s only right that David Button plays.”
As a result, Johnstone hasn’t even made the bench for the last three matches and he is likely to sit out West Brom’s final two Championship fixtures against Reading and Barnsley.
Manchester United are also keen on Johnstone’s services, while West Ham, who were linked last summer, Newcastle and Southampton are all battling it out for his signature.
He told GIVEMESPORT: “It seems like Spurs are pretty high up chasing Sam Johnstone, who’s obviously a free agent.
“He would be a good signing for them, he’s an England international and he would provide good competition and cover for Lloris, and he would be better than what Spurs have got with Gollini not really staking a claim since his arrival last summer.”
