Tottenham: £53k-a-week star has 'outside shout' of making England World Cup squad

Tottenham star Ryan Sessegnon has an “outside chance” of making England’s World Cup squad, according to The Sun journalist Tom Barclay.

The 22-year-old has never won a senior cap, but Barclay reckons that injuries and a run of good form could lead to him earning a surprise seat on the plane to Qatar in mid-November.

Generally, it’s been a testing three years for Sessegnon since his £25m switch from Fulham back in 2019, but Antonio Conte’s arrival has finally shed some light at the end of the tunnel.

That’s because for the first time in his Tottenham career, he’s getting regular game-time, even though he’s currently competing against one of the best left wing-backs in the business in Ivan Perisic.

Furthermore, the £53,000 per-week ace is finally proving his fitness following an injury-hit first couple of years in north London.

Sessegnon has started 15 Premier League games in 2022, with his encouraging form allowing him to continue playing for England Under-21s.

The next step for the ex-Fulham man will surely be targeting a place in Gareth Southgate’s squad, especially with the left-sided role up for grabs and Barclay doesn’t think Sessegnon being picked for the winter tournament can be completely ruled out.

Asked whether anyone from the Young Lions squad could make the step up for the 2022 World Cup, he told GIVEMESPORT: “I can’t really see anyone [apart from Conor Gallagher]. Maybe Sessegnon has got an outside shout depending on injuries and how well he plays between now and then.”

Ben Chilwell and Luke Shaw, who’ve been England’s two left-sided players for the last couple of years, are clearly both above Sessegnon in the pecking order.
