Torrential rain causes massive leak at supermarket

Greater Manchester was battered by torrential rainfall this afternoon (June 25) with many areas seeing flash flooding.

This came after a yellow weather warning was issued earlier this week for thunderstorms to hit the region today. Thunder mostly evaded Greater Manchester but for more than an hour heavy rain hit the region.

Streets and roads quickly became flooded after the severe rain fall. This led to warnings for road users over increased surface water during the downpour.

Dramatic footage shared by a former councillor on Twitter showed water gushing through the ceiling of a busy supermarket. Richard Critchley shared the footage online from the Sainsbury's Salford Superstore on Regent Road, causing some flooding in the store.

He Tweeted: "Sainsbury’s Regent Road just sprung a leak. Drains probably couldn’t cope with the heavy rain."

Similar scenes were seen at the Costco store at Trafford Park just under two weeks ago when thunderstorms hit the region.

The extent of the damage at the Sainsbury's due to the leak is unknown. Sainsbury's have been approached for more information.
