Tony Smith looking to re-live Elland Road delight with Hull KR

Elland Road has already provided Tony Smith with one of the most memorable occasions of his coaching career, and he believes victory this Saturday would be equally satisfying. Smith takes his side to Leeds for their Challenge Cup semi-final with Huddersfield, with a place in the final later this month in London the prize for the winner.

For many associated with Rovers, it will be a first foray into Elland Road - but Smith coached there as far back as 17 years ago. That night, his Leeds Rhinos side were crowned champions of the world when the Super League champions defeated NRL premiers Canterbury Bulldogs in a thrilling game under the lights.

It remains, by Smith's own admission, one of the proudest and most memorable games he has ever been involved in.

"It was a special night," he says. "That one really sticks in my memory bank, and not many things tend to stick there these days.

"We did such a fantastic job in the first half, we were smashing Canterbury, a team that I grew up watching a lot back home in Australia. Having played against them numerous times, to be crowned world champions over them was something awesome.

"The second half was nervy from memory but it was a fantastic game of rugby league with some unbelievable tries scored. I love entertaining rugby league and some games stick for those reasons."

Having already announced his intent to leave Rovers at the end of this season, this could perhaps be Smith's last opportunity to take the Robins to a major final, capping off a successful spell in charge of the club. With that in mind, he is in no doubt about what victory on Saturday would represent.
