Tony Docherty 'sick of the sight' of Brendan Rodgers as dominant Celtic boss spurs mixed emotions in Dundee foe
Tony Docherty is delighted to see Brendan Rodgers back because he believes he gives Scottish football even more of an X-Factor.
The Dundee boss will pit his wits against his Celtic counterpart at Parkhead on Saturday afternoon. Docherty reckons it is good for the Scottish game to have another high-profile manager - even if he was sick of the sight of him the first time around. He was assistant manager to Derek McInnes when Aberdeen were second best to Rodgers’ Invincibles.
Docherty recalled: “We went toe-to-toe with him and I have the utmost respect for him. I am glad he is back in the league because there can’t be enough top coaches in Scottish football, in my opinion. There are so many brilliant coaches, players and clubs but for him, he is someone I have a huge amount of respect for because he has coached at every level and he has excelled.
“He has also maintained his humanity and he is such a good guy to speak to. He is good company and I look forward to seeing him on Saturday.
“I remember when we were pitting our wits against him, it was us against him really. Chris Davies was his assistant at the time and I would like to say fond memories but they weren’t really. I was sick of the sight of him but he is somebody I have huge respect for because of the work he has done in the game.”
Celtic haven’t hit the same heights so far in Rodgers’ second coming. They have lost their grip on the Viaplay Cup but still remain top of the table. Docherty accepts it is only a matter of time before they are in top gear.
